Excessive Realness is a queer-normative dance intensive geared toward LGBTQIA+ people who consider themselves dancers or use dance as a tool for their own artistic and personal practice. This intensive provides a platform for participants to channel their own artistic practices, personal expression, and sociopolitical engagement through dance, performance, queerness, and the many other intersecting identities that people within these communities hold.
Along with using LGBTQIA+ to describe those who are marginalized because of their sexuality, gender, and sex, we also define queerness as the non-normative and anti-normative expressions and ways of life that deviate from the dominating hegemonies that attempt to dictate “normal” or “correct” modes of living in life. We believe this applies to dance as well. You do not need to identify as LGBTQIA+ to attend our intensive; we welcome allies/accomplices of LGBTQIA+ people. However, this intensive is created with the intention that LGBTQIA+ people have safe(r) space to dance and learn in; we create this intensive for those folks who do not already have supportive and welcoming spaces and platforms to explore and express their artistic inclinations. If you are someone who does not identify on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, we expect a fierce alliance with justice and a dedication to create deep friendships with those who do identify as LGBTQIA+. We will not tolerate discrimination in any form.
